Misplaced fitting prevents proper rear axle bearing Iubrication JD model "R" tractors

On model "R" tractors equipped with mud guards and AR961R rear axles, it is sometimes found to be impossible to inject grease into the rear axle bearings through the fitting in one of the two retaining cap screws. When this occurs, it’s very likely that these screws have been put in the wrong holes. One of these tapped holes extends back to the cross bore for bearing lubrication, while the other is merely a shallow blind hold (see Figure below). Interchanging these screws will allow grease to be forced into the bearing.

If desired, tractors not so equipped maybe provided with auxiliary rear axle bearing lubrication by drilling axles according to the dimensions in Figure below.
